Sunday Scribblings #207: Tick-Tock Minute: The Sound of Now

Tick-Tock Day—another one of those quirky days is today, December 29th, and is a fun and gentle reminder that time never stops. As the minutes tick-tock away, they remind us of those to-do lists and of the flight of time. Time flies, indeed!

Whether it’s a list of errands, goals, or resolutions, it seems like there’s always something – well – to simply do! So as we reach the end of the year, and Tick-tock day comes around to remind us playfully and seriously of that, what can we do but gracefully bid goodbye to the year that is ending and joyfully welcome the new year! And make those goals all over again 🙂

And what if we could capture the essence of time itself in a more creative way? Which is why I bring you the Minute Poetic Form, a 60-syllable structure that mirrors the passing of each second, making the most of every tick and tock. Read on to learn more about this fun form that can help us reflect on the busy, beautiful moments of life.

Poetic Sundays: The Minute as the Moments Go Tick-Tock-ing By

The Minute poem seemed perfect to feature this Sunday – being Tick-Tock Day (and I do have fun with these quirky days, some more than others, of course).

I have written about this poetic form earlier, so do check out this post for more details and a poem I attempted then. But here is a quick overview.

The minute is a sixty-syllable, twelve-line narrative verse poem written in three quatrains, one syllable for each second in a minute. It has a syllabic structure of 8/4/4/4 across each quatrain and rhyme scheme of aabb/ccdd/eeff across the three quatrains. It is normally used to describe a completed event, and keeping in theme with the name, something done/completed in a minute!

But you can use it in anyway you wish – from profound to whimsical, from humorous to deep. From completed tasks to the nature of time, or anything else that strikes your fancy or whimsy…

My Minute Attempt As I Find Myself on Tick-Tock Day

Just a Minute…What?
Didn’t I just say Happy New Year?
To near and dear?
But now I find
The year’s behind!

Didn’t I just make goals galore?
Not less, no more…
Goldilocks-right,
Dreams within sight
.

Oh well…let me then bid a goodbye..
Too late to try
Will start a new,
a fresh to-do..
