For Six Word Saturday (6WS):
Off we headed to the derby earlier today. As we checked our car Friday night at the trial runs, we had to make a few adjustments – a wobbly tire, some weights – and we were all set for today’s race. Our trial times were better than the previous years’ runs and this time, our cub scout made the car totally by himself (no dad’s interference or mom’s either here!).
One wheel refused to touch the ground and as we tried to fix it to pass the technical inspection, we hoped we would not damage anything else in the car. Well, we finally passed the wheel test, the weight test, and the dimensions test and our son headed to his session with the Spirit Judge. The Spirit Judge asks the boys questions to figure out how much they were involved in the process of making the car. Then it was time for the races to begin.
Our pack runs a total of six rounds of racing for all the cars. So each boy gets to watch his car race half a dozen times. A software built for this sets up the cars that race each time and the lanes they will race in randomly so each car gets a fair chance in all lanes with different cars. Once all six races are over, the winners are decided by looking at the total of the times in all six races and the car with the lowest total wins.
Our den of the five boys out of seven who made it to the race today did pretty good in the sense that almost all our cars got a first place at least 3 times out of 6. And we all made it in the top 15 out of 35. But unfortunately, not the first three. Well, that is OK since we do have one more year. And, I guess, because of all the effort he did put into his car, our cub scout won the Spirit Award from his den. I was definitely a proud mom, not only because he won the Spirit Award, but also because he took his 15th place with a smile on his face. (See Jim Courier’s quote below)
Here is a photo of his car racing ahead of the other cars to the finish line today for Saturday Snapshot: (it is not too clear since it is a snapshot taken from the video):
And for Quote It over at Freda’s, again, keeping in mind the theme from earlier, a few quotes about trying and the spirit of the game:
“Think left and think right and think low and think high.
