Sunday Scribblings #213: It’s All in the Name!

“This week is filled with quirky ‘name holidays,’ so I bring a namely spin to some simple poetic forms for the Poetic Sunday section —’all in the name of’ this ‘name week!’ In addition, I bring you extras! From playful wordplay to rhythmic verses, each piece draws inspiration from the “name celebrations” sprinkled throughout the days. Whether it’s the poetic twists or fun games or activities, this week’s scribblings are all about having fun with names! After all, it’s all in the name!

Poetic Sundays: It’s All in the Name!

Acrostic

  • Simply have the first letter of each line spells out a name.

ABCderian Poem

  • Can be written with names for each alphabet, following sequential letters. Make it more challenging by having each line be a mini-tautogram in itself (that is all the words of the line start with the same letter)
  • Example:
    Anna adores apricots,
    Bina bakes banana bread,
Cara crafts cute cards. and so on, as long as you can go on!!

You can create an abcderian poem using names of people you know, or not..

“An_a_Gram and …. Words Within” Poetry

  • A poem using words formed from the letters of a person’s name as key elements in the verse.
  • Example (for “Alice” → “Lace, Lie, Ail, Lice, Ice, Ace, Lac”): Use as many of these words in a poem (in any form of your choice)
  • And/or if you can find anagrams for the name, like Celia for Alice, you could use those as well within the poem.

The Rest of the Alphabet Poems

(links will take you to my post about the form)

Of course, you can write a bio poem or a Clerihew too.. A form that includes the name of the poet within is the doha. An epistolary addressed to someone (or yourself) will fit in here as well. Maybe your namesake! Other forms that could work – an ode to the person. You can always pick any form of your choice and include the name within!!

  1. OMG, glad I saw this today. I didn’t know it was chocolate chip cookie week. That sounds fabulous and something I really should celebrate with my son. We both love choc chip cookies, yum!!!

  2. I have always loved to write poems. I even had one published in a book as a child. St Patrick’s day is on the 17th of March So I’ll be celebrating!

  3. I really like the idea of “An_a_Gram and …. Words Within” Poetry. I wrote a little sentence with one of my nicknames (Debbie): DEB I BE. I thought I was so clever. And my name can actually be played on the piano!

  4. So many great foodie celebration days! I could definitely get behind most of those!
I like the ABC style poems; there is definitely a good structure to that, that I like.
