I planned to have reviews posted everyday this week for children’s books. I started on them and now will just post them all on Saturday:)
For my Friday post this week, I wanted to post a list of fun books for children – and there are so many books I can think of, and so many lists all around. I still find myself reading books for children so often, well, actually everyday. Rereading books I read as a child does a few things for me – brings back wonderful childhood memories that I relive when I read them (like when, where I read them, what was happening at that time), gives me new perspectives of the book than when I read it as a child, and also gives me that wonderful feeling of reading a well-loved book!

For My Friday Flash 55: A couple of weeks ago, my son’s cub scout pack had an overnight trip to the USS Pampanito, a WW II sub that is now anchored off Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco, and is a museum. Compared to the Hornet that we had a similar trip to last year, this sub is almost miniature-sized, but it is equally fascinating. We were forty of us (half of this number being kids aged 7 to 12) and we felt we were crowding the sub but during the WW II missions that this sub went on, it carried a crew of 80 men (wow, they must have been packed like sardines and stayed together for 2 1/2 months, with baths as frequent as once in 10 days!)
If you find yourself at Fisherman’s Wharf with a couple of hours to spare, you should visit the Pampanito – a wonderful peek into history. Here is my Friday 55 along with a few snaps of the trip (have a look at the Thanksgiving Menu – since the crew were away from everywhere at the bottom of the sea most of the time, all effort was made at least to provide good meals to them)
Off to the Pampanito we went
Moms, dads, cubs too
Below deck the night was spent
We were a faux sub crew,
Night watch, reveille, cleanup duties
Midnight snacks of milk and cuties
Toured the halls of the boat
Learned how it sinks deep, stays afloat
Now we are back
With a wonderful memory pack.

Five Minute Fridays – the theme is Song – and I wrote what first came to my mind –

Oh! that song, once again! You know that feeling when you hear a tune or part of a song somewhere, maybe someone hums it as they pass you on the road, or you hear it in the market or on the radio, or your kids are yelling it across the house; and it makes its way inside your head; and it makes it’s home there. It refuses to leave – it is not like you do not love that song – in fact, you enjoy that song – it is a favorite of yours, actually. But, you know the saying, ‘Even too much of a good thing is bad.’ – as the song runs on continuous playback in your mind, you want someone to sing another song, you want to remember another song. And soon enough, that other song, makes its way – you love it, you sing it, maybe not aloud – and now, this one refuses to say goodbye!

From ‘The Wig in the Window’ by Kristen Kittscher (ARC copy from the publisher, thanks to Kristen): I just started reading this book and am sharing reading time with my ten-year old son who is also reading it (though he is almost done). I can tell he is enjoying it since he has devoured it!
For Book Beginnings:
‘I thought I’d mastered the art of escape. It was our third midnight spy mission, after all. I knew to oil my bedroom window so it wouldn’t squeak.’
For Friday 56:

Beverly Cleary and Roald Dahl write some of the funnier children's books. The Fudge series by Judy Blume also comes to mind. Along with the Pippi Longstocking books by Astrid Lindgren. Ah, now you're taking me on a trip down memory lane. I could probably keep naming books….
PS The Wig in the Window sounds intriguing from the line teaser. What is it about?

I have had songs that never seem to leave in my mind. Depending on the song (and how much I love it) that is not necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes it is the song that helps me to remember the person I want to be. Thank you for sharing.

Old Mother Hubbard is pretty funny. My grandson also loved Ten Little Monkeys Jumping on the bed.
I'm into pre-school story books and I love Caps for Sale. It has a monkey see monkey do ending that maybe only the adults get, but is so much fun to read with lots of active stomping and such.
