Isn’t the umbrella so very cool? An everyday tool that has been around for ages, and protected us over the centuries from the elements, as well as lends itself as a decorative accessory, a handy weapon, and so much more. From the parasol that protected the Egyptian pharaohs to modern-pocket sized versions that are minuscule but transform to “portable roofs,” (as Rankine describes them in her book below), the umbrella, for me, is definitely cool. Which is why I had to bring you a slew of umbrella books today!!

All the Wonderful Books that Fit Under My Umbrella

Picture Books
If I start reviewing each of these books, I might end up repeating myself saying, charming, delightful, stunning artwork, and similar words and phrases throughout! But it is kind of how I feel about many of these books. For the ones I feel differently, maybe it might be less charming and more heartwarming, or tots adorbs rather than some other adjective, or whimsical illustrations instead of stunning (though some are both!). Suffice it to say that I love them all and fully recommend each one of these books!

Children’s Books
Ruskin Bond’s books always capture my interest, and the book below (and the movie based on it) delights! Nelson’s book is sweet and heartwarming and a great middle-grade read, while Katrina Leno’s book is a humorous adventure-filled romp!
- The Blue Umbrella by Ruskin Bond (Children’s Book, 9 – 12 years, and up)
- The Umbrella House by Colleen Nelson (Children’s Books, 8 – 12 years, and up)
- The Umbrella Maker’s Son by Katrina Leno (Children’s Book, 8 – 12 years, and up)
The Rest
Brolliology is a must-read – such a delightful tale of the umbrella from eons ago to today – and done in a easy, chatting over a cup of tea way, kind of like having tea with the ever-popular umbrella-wielding nanny Mary Poppins! And as for Tod Lending’s book, I have it on my tbr and will definitely be reading it given it is a WWII book (and I do tend to read them all, despite how I might end up teary-eyed as I go through the pages of these books).
- Brolliology: A History of the Umbrella in Life and Literature by Marion Rankine (History Humor/ Nonfiction)
- The Umbrella Maker’s Son: A Novel of WWII by Tod Lending (WWII Fiction)

I love how something as simple as an umbrella can have such an interesting history and so many different uses!
I need to get a few of these for my grandson. He is two months old now. I can’t wait til he is old enough to go splash in rain puddles. I always loved that as a kid.
That’s a unique list of books with umbrella themes. Gonna check out each so can guide my little niece to enjoy her reading pleasure. Cheers SiennyLovesDrawing
